Accepting Help

So today we helped with freshman move-in on campus (UNCC). This is my 4th year helping with freshman move-in. Well here's what I've observed...

Sometimes you'll walk up to a car and ask if you can help and people will respond with a "No thanks...we'll get it."

Why do people refuse help?

Why do people find it so hard to accept things for free?

Do you find it difficult accepting someone's help when they offer?

Do you find it difficult to accept things for free?

I've got a better one than that--first day of classes, I was out trying to give away free donuts...no such luck. I took 3 dozen with me, and after an hour and a half, still had seven left. Most people looked at me as if I were utterly crazy for offering to give them a free donut, almost like they were insulted by the very idea of a free donut. I don't get it--it's a donut, man! How can you turn down a free donut? In the words of Homer Simpson, "Donuts: is there anything they can't do?"
